# The Agile Family Map

Place common agile methods and scaling frameworks on a shared, independent map.

Duration: 5 min

This optional Deeper Dive places common names on a shared map. Extreme Programming emphasizes continuously practiced technical quality. Lean contributed waste reduction, built-in quality, pull, and flow. Historical methods such as Crystal, DSDM, and FDD contributed right-sized process, timeboxing, business collaboration, and feature focus.

Scaling frameworks address coordination across many teams. They are advanced tools rather than the shared foundation. Teams often blend practices; the Manifesto's values and principles are the common trunk.

This is orientation, not comparative advice or training in any framework. Explore a framework only when its published guidance and the constraints of your setting warrant it.

### The agile family map

**Extreme Programming (XP)** is the craft branch: practices such as pair programming and test-driven development intensify continuous technical quality.

**Lean** predates agile and contributed ideas about waste, built-in quality, pull, and flow. The current Kanban Guide defines Kanban for knowledge work as a strategy for optimising the flow of value; it is not a synonym for Scrum or for agile as a whole.

**Crystal, DSDM, and FDD** are historical siblings associated with right-sized process, timeboxing and business participation, and feature-centered delivery.

**Scrum** is a distinct framework with its own current guide, accountabilities, events, artifacts, and empirical theory. **Scaling frameworks** address coordination across many teams. Know the categories without mistaking any one of them for the whole shared foundation. Values and principles are the trunk; frameworks and practices are tools teams may combine.
